Sesamoid fractures are often presented with localized pain. Often resulted from the direct blows or trauma to the MTP joints. This article will provide an overview of sesamoid fractures of foot in particular. Sesamoid bones are found embedded near tendons in many joints. The main role of sesamoid bones is to protect the tendon and enhance their mechanical effect. Most sesamoid bones are small and their shape resembles the shape of sesame.
However, two of the largest sesamoids which are found near first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint and vulnerable to fractures. The sesamoids of the first MTP joint are embedded within the tendon of the flexor hallucis brevis. They allow for increased dorsiflexion of the MTP.
