A news published in healthcare daily suggested that doctors from India’s top medical institution are in favor of “Presumed Consent” for harvesting organs in case of accidental fatalities to improve the rate of organ donation. According to the news, Spain and few other European countries have created a system of "opt-out" where organ donation will occur automatically unless a special request is made (by the patient or the relatives) before death for organs not to be taken. Spain has the highest organ donation rate at about 34 donations per million whereas in India it is 0.03 per million.
Even though the awareness campaigns by government and NGOs are improving the rates, at least 50,000 patients in India require a heart for a heart transplant at any time.
