Paronychia is a common presentation in a general practitioners or dermatologist OPD. It is caused by the infection of the nail fold caused by bacterial or fungal agents. Chronic and recurrent cases cause considerable discomfort to the patients. Treatment involves symptomatic, medical or surgical therapy and is determined by the extent and duration of disease. Superficial soft tissues around a nail plate may become infected, inflamed and develop an abscess. The condition is more common around a fingernail than a toe nail.

Paronychia may be categorized as acute or chronic depending on the duration of the condition. The etiological agents and presentations vary in both vary.
