Recently the draft of ‘THE MEDICAL TREATMENT OF TERMINALLY-ILL PATIENTS (PROTECTION OF PATIENTS AND MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS) BILL' has been made public and comments have been invited from the doctors, lawyers and social organizations. The proposed act deals with the treatment (or rather withdrawing of treatment) to terminally ill patients or in other words, it legalises the ‘Passive Euthanasia’.
The ‘ Terminally Ill Patient ' has been defined under the proposed act as: Terminal Illness means Such illness, injury or degeneration of physical or mental condition which is causing extreme pain and suffering to the patients and which, according to reasonable medical opinion, will inevitably cause the untimely death of the patient concerned, or Which has caused a persistent and irreversible vegetative condition under which no meaningful existence of life is possible for the patient.
