Refractory ascites is defined as ascites that does not resolve with the standard medical treatment of low sodium diet and diuretics. It results in frequent hospital admissions with an unfavorable prognosis due to the high mortality rates. Large-volume paracentesis combined with IV albumin is considered as the first-line of treatment for refractory ascites. However, the long-term clinical benefits of this treatment are debated, with insufficient data available regarding refractory ascites.
