Epidemiological studies suggest that diabetes affects the periodontal status through direct effects of hyperglycemia. Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are believed to indirectly modulate the dental health status via an overall impairment of wound healing and changes in periodontal tissues. Studies also showed that subjects with good metabolic control [measured in terms of glycated hemoglobin levels (HbA1c)] exhibited a slower rate of attachment loss than their poorly controlled counterparts.

By contrast, studies also revealed that better glycemic control could be achieved after periodontal treatment. What are the most common periodontal issues presented to you by the diabetic patients?
