Screening by cardiac PET/MRI shows more promising results than PET/CT for detecting cardiac sarcoidosis. The new study suggests that it also provides better diagnostic image quality and less radiation dose. Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disease characterized by the formulation of granulomas in many tissues. Though the overall number of patients diagnosed with cardiac sarcoidosis is estimated to be only about 2% of all sarcoidosis cases, the mortality is much higher.

Studies have shown that among patients dying with sarcoidosis in whom an autopsy is performed, the figure has been estimated to be between 20% and 25%.
