The National Polio Surveillance Project was launched in India in the year 1988 with the sole objective to make India polio-free. In collaboration with WHO, the initiative in India was knowns as “Pulse Polio” from 1995 to 1996.

This immunization campaign was launched by the Indian government wherein 2 drops of Oral polio vaccine (OPV) was given to all children younger than 5 years of age. In the year 2012, WHO struck off India from the list of polio-endemic countries.
