Sarcopenia is age-related skeletal muscle changes that cause loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength. Both in men and women maximum voluntary contractile strength decreases by 20-40% by the age of 70-80 years. Majorly decreased muscle mass results to loss of strength along with the quality of muscle. Mainly decreased number of motor neurons leads to loss of skeletal muscle fibers.

Other etiological factors such as decreased physical activity, hormonal changes, decreased caloric and protein intake, inflammatory cascade, and altered protein synthesis contributes to the development of sarcopenia. Sarcopenia causes skeletal muscle atrophy and weakness that results in loss of functional mobility, independence, and fragility which affects the overall quality of life of older adults.
