The increasing occurrence of type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease in the Indian subcontinent is a cause for concern. Currently, there are 69 million people with diabetes in India, and about 77 million have prediabetes. Prediabetes not only increases future risk of diabetes, but it also clusters with cardiovascular risk factors such as central obesity, dyslipidaemia and hypertension. In general, prediabetes is defined by a rise in blood glucose to above normal, but not high enough to qualify as diabetes.

Attached figure illustrates the diagnosis of prediabetes – as suggested by the World Health Organization.
