India is the first country in the world to have launched a National Family Planning Programme way back in 1952. Over the decades, the Programme has undergone changes in terms of policy and actual Programme implementation. The Programme not only achieves population stabilization goals but also promote reproductive health and reduces maternal, infant & child mortality and morbidity. The implementation of the National Family Welfare Programme has been satisfactory with the performance in IUCD insertions.
Family Planning is a key priority area of the Government and it has been vigorously pursued through the National Rural Health Mission launched in the year 2005.
