About 15 different types of hernia are found in the abdominal wall structures, apart from the commonly observed inguinal and ventral hernias. The rare abdominal wall hernias include post-laparoscopy trocar hernias, spigelian hernias, obturator hernias, perineal hernias and lumbar hernias. These hernias occur in around 1-2% of the population and are difficult to diagnose due to their rare occurrence and unusual anatomic locations. Most of these hernias are best managed with a prosthetic graft or by a laparoscopic approach unless strangulation obstruction is present.
