The risk of bacteremia and local infections with endoscopic procedures is related to the breaching of tissue followed by contamination with the endoscopic accessory. In several cases, infective endocarditis is reported. The most possible cases of bacteremia are attributed to esophageal dilation, sclerotherapy of varices, and instrumentation of obstructed bile ducts. Therefore, the use of antimicrobials has importance in endoscopy.
