A 46-year-old man presents to the emergency department (ED) with severe neck pain after a motor vehicle accident. He was a restrained driver when his car was struck from behind. He denies the loss of consciousness and was taken to the ED by ambulance in a hard-cervical collar after the accident. On examination, his motor and sensation remain intact in his bilateral upper extremities. He denies having any medical conditions or a history of tobacco use.
