Prolonged fasting, in the case of religious rituals like Ramadan, may pose a higher risk of hypoglycemia in diabetic patients. Clinical studies demonstrate that patients treated with sulfonylureas have a relatively higher risk of hypoglycemia. Rapid-acting insulin  has been proven to efficiently control the blood glucose level and lower incidence of hypoglycemia. During Ramadan, insulin treatment with structured diabetes education for point of care glucose monitoring is a vital tool for reducing uneventful episodes.
