Antioxidant supplementation was associated with a decreased risk of first pulmonary exacerbation in 73 pancreatic insufficient Cystic Fibrosis (CF) subjects reported a recent trial published in American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Further, the antioxidant treatment resulted in an increased systemic antioxidant concentration, reduced systemic inflammation after 4 weeks and was safe and well tolerated. The double-blind, controlled trial included 73 pancreatic insufficient cystic fibrosis (CF) subjects (10 years of age and older) with a predicted FEV1 between 40-100%.
The subjects were randomized to receive an antioxidant-enriched multivitamin or control multivitamin without antioxidant enrichment for 16 weeks.
