Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is often treated with heparin followed by oral vitamin K antagonists. Similarly, newer oral anticoagulants like rivaroxaban are commonly used only after bridge therapy with heparin in CVT. However, there are few evidences suggesting that rivaroxaban can be used for treating patients with CVT. In this regard, a recent study published in Clinical neurology and neurosurgery reported that rivaroxaban was safe and effective in clinically stable patients with CVT, and it can be used without previous heparin therapy.
A total of 20 patients (80% were males; mean age: 34.1 years) were initiated on rivaroxaban and followed up for a mean duration of 6 months.
