There is a lack of specific therapeutic options in the treatment of several cancers despite the vast available therapies. Although the current treatment options are safe and efficacious, the treatments of advanced cancers warrant specific approaches. Considering this need, the USFDA has approved the first lung and thyroid cancer-specific therapy – selpercatinib. The USFDA has recently granted approval to selpercatinib capsules for the treatment of lung and thyroid cancers with certain genetic mutations.

The drug has been granted an accelerated approval in three categories, namely, priority review, breakthrough therapy, and orphan drug designation .
