Hospital-acquired infections are usually dangerous and hard to treat. Hand hygiene is a proven way of reducing infections in the hospitals. It is the most important, simple and cost-effective way of reducing health-care associated infections. Several studies have demonstrated that handwashing virtually eradicates the carriage of MRSA which invariably occurs on the hands of health-care practitioners working in ICUs.
Another way of improving hand hygiene is by avoiding handshakes in hospitals. But the compliance for this practice is very poor among hospital staff. Should we adhere to this practice of avoiding handshakes in hospitals?
