Poor sleep habits in adults with type 2 diabetes are linked to complications such as neuropathic pain, high blood sugar levels, and fatigue, according to a new study. This was more commonly seen in women than men. The new study is published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing and it involved 90 adults with type 2 diabetes. The study explored whether disturbed sleep is associated with certain diabetes-related comorbidities.
The health and sleep data were collected over a year using a variety of methods including a diabetes distress scale and a symptom checklist. The study found that elevated blood sugar levels, neuropathic pain, HbA1c, and fatigue were all associated with sleep disturbance.
