Even after 70 years of remarkable progress, what catalyzes India to shame is its statistics on maternal mortality rate (MMR) in the world. The partial success stories of various schemes by virtue of continuing, moderate to inferior implementations especially in rural India demonstrate the inadequacies of our health care system in reaching the large masses. Figures of concern The global MMR has come down by 44 % since 1990. However, as per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, out of the total 5.29 lakh pregnancy-related deaths recorded world over, 1.36 lakh occur in India.
