Recently, a US study demonstrated that semaglutide can increase the risk of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D), overweight, or obesity compared to non-glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists. 1 Now, two independent larger studies have investigated the association between semaglutide and NAION risk among the Danish and Norwegian populations. In the first study involving 424,152 Danish T2D patients, semaglutide doubled the risk of NAION, with 218 individuals developing NAION during five years of observation.

2 The second study analyzed data from T2D patients using semaglutide or sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors from the Danish and Norwegian national health registries. 3 The incidence rate of NAION was higher among semaglutide initiators than SGLT2 inhibitor initiators among Danish (2.19 vs. 1.18 per 10,000โ€ฆ
