Patients who suffer from TMJ ankylosis have significant difficulties in various activities due to the essential nature of TMJ. This disabling disease can affect any age group but has been most commonly reported in the first decade of life. Early surgery, aggressive re-section and post-operative physiotherapy is required for correction of the deformity. Ankylosis of temporomandibular joint occurs due to pathological fusion of the mandibular condyle and glenoid fossa resulting in restriction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

The fusion may be bony or fibrous in nature with partial to complete reduction in mobility of the joint. Pathophysiology TMJ ankylosis can occur due to various factors.
