Fragility hip fracture is a serious complication of osteoporosis with significant morbidity, mortality, and financial burden. Its incidence increases with age. As per reports, the adjusted incidence rate of hip fractures in Thailand increased by more than 31% from 1997 to 2006, while one-year mortality due to hip fractures increased from 18% in 1999 to 21% in 2007. Vitamin D inadequacy , a rampant health problem, is a major modifiable risk factor for fragility hip fractures.
Though several studies have reported the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among the Thai population suffering from hip fractures, there are no reports relating vitamin D deficiency with osteoporosis and the resultant fragility hip fractures .
