Tinea cruris is one of the most common and most embarrassing of dermatophytosis. Unlike candidiasis and sporotrichosis, tinea cruris in healthy individuals is easily amenable to topical antifungal. It is a common infection in India due to the tropical climate. Commonly known as ‘jock itch’, this infection is thought to be more common in adult men. The main factors required for establishing infection include the presence of fungal spores and moisture to enable germination.
Among infections due to dermatophytes, tinea cruris constitutes 8% to 10% of infections in Indian studies. Tight clothing has been found to be the main culprit in both men and women. Increased rates occur in hot humid weather. Increased incidence among men has been attributed to the presence of skin folds in external genitalia. Older age, obesity, diabetes and immunosuppression may increase the risk of infection.…
