Refractory status epilepticus (RSE) has lacked a consensus definition over the years; some consider it as status epilepticus that persists despite treatment with benzodiazepine and one antiepileptic medication, while others define RSE as a failure of benzodiazepine and two antiepileptic medications. Regardless, RSE is a medical emergency that requires aggressive treatment to avoid long-term complications and reduce mortality. It can be treated by resolving the underlying cause and administering intravenous anesthetics and antiepileptic drugs. Other treatment modalities include diet therapies, electroconvulsive treatment, and surgical options.
