Temporomandibular joint disorder, a type of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The typical features include pain in TMJ, restriction of mandibular movement, and TMJ sounds. The prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorder is between 5% and 12%. Diagnosis is usually based on patient history and physical examination. The standard tests to correctly diagnose the TMJ disorders are not currently available.
The underlying etiology and symptoms are not fully understood, making it a hard-to-diagnose condition.
