Intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy is the standard treatment for diabetic macular edema (DME), but many patients show an inadequate response. To address this limitation, a study evaluated the effect of adding interferon alpha-2b eye drops to intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) therapy, assessing treatment outcomes in 87 patients with DME. The study found significant anatomical and visual improvement in both treatment groups.
However, patients receiving IVB plus interferon alpha-2b showed greater reductions in central macular thickness (−117 µm vs −54 µm) and greater improvement in best-corrected visual acuity (0.2 vs 0.1 LogMAR) compared with IVB alone.
