Tracheostomy aids in patient ventilation either spontaneously or via ventilators, through the passage of a tube. It is commonly performed in ICUs. The rationale is to reduce dead space, bronchopulmonary toileting, and prevention of aspiration. The conventional way is surgical tracheostomy, which gives open access to the trachea with no damage to the surrounding structures; however, percutaneous dilatation tracheostomy is more conservative but can be a traumatic process. So, which is the better approach? How and when do we decide on one?
