Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) are among the most frequent infections prevailing in the in-patient care facilities. Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) accounts for 59% of SSTIs cases presented to the emergency department. Introduction SSTIs can affect skin, cellulite, fascial layers, muscular and tendinous tissues. SSTIs can range from uncomplicated to complicated (necrotizing or non-necrotizing) infections.
There can be purulent or non-purulent SSTIs that range in their severity. MRSA is one of the major causes of purulent infections like furuncles, carbuncles, abscesses, cellulitis, necrotizing fasciitis, and diabetic foot ulcers. MRSA infections of skin and soft tissue tend to be more invasive as compared to non-MRSA infections.
