Hysterectomy is one of the most common major Gynaecological Surgeries performed world-wide. Approximately six hundred thousand Hysterectomies are performed in the United States in a year. Even in United States, one out of five hysterectomies was found to be unindicated/unnecessary. It is generally considered that the rate of hysterectomy in India is still lower than the western world.
But some recent studies to assess the current realities of un-indicated Hysterectomy in Indian Patients, specially in younger age group cast doubt on this assumption. In India there is no comprehensive data to quantify the number of Hysterectomies performed.
