The USFDA recently approved sulbactam and durlobactum for hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia caused by the Acinetobacter baumannii-calcoaceticus complex for patients above 18 years of age. Acinetobacter baumannii-calcoaceticus complex comprises four species of bacteria from the Acinetobacter family. They are resistant to multiple antibiotics and are often detected in healthcare settings.
Efficacy of the drugs The approval was granted based on a clinical trial where 177 hospitalized patients with pneumonia were treated with sulbactam and durlobactum or colistin for 14 days. Among them, 19% of patients who received sulbactam and durlobactum died, compared to 32% of patients who received colistin.
