The USFDA has approved perfluorohexyloctane, a semifluorinated alkane ophthalmic solution, for treating the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease (DED). DED occurs due to excessive tear evaporation caused by an unstable tear lipid layer. It is frequently associated with Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Inflammation, desiccation, and damage to the ocular surface are often observed when the tear film is altered.

Mechanism of perfluorohexyloctane Perfluorohexyloctane stabilizes the tear film lipid layer at the air-liquid interface, thereby preventing excessive tear evaporation. ##Study## The approval was granted based on results from two phase III, 57-day multicentric clinical trials. Participants = 1,217 patients with DED and signs of MGD Following perfluorohexyloctane treatment, significant relief of symptoms was observed on days 15 and 57 in patients. In addition, statistically…
