Vitamin C has long been a candidate for modulating periodontal diseases, although the exact role of vitamin C deficiency in periodontitis is not known. Vitamin C supports periodontal health through maintenance of gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone, which all support teeth. Vitamin C intakes below recommended levels are not likely to directly cause periodontal disease, however, some human studies have shown that patients with severe periodontitis have lower vitamin C intake (<47 mg/day) or lower plasma vitamin C when compared to healthy controls (8.3 versus 11.3 mg/L, respectively).
