This article reports the study which determined the ability of current thresholds which define vitamin D 'deficiency' and 'insufficiency' can predict bone disease. The study included 10000+ participants whose serum vitamin D concentration was determined along with biochemical abnormalities. Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency are defined when a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration of less than 30 and 75nmol/L respectively. If we consider these thresholds define the onset of bone disease, then around 4% individuals will have vitamin D 'deficiency' and 75% will have 'insufficiency'.

In short, these thresholds should be able to identify the persons who are at higher risk of developing osteomalacia, osteoporosis or both. In case of vitamin D deficiency, secondary hyperparathyroidism increases bone remodeling which replaces the fully mineralized bone with younger bone. Ifโ€ฆ
