As we know, there could be two ways in which one can arrive at a treatment decision a) Clinical 'Judgement': Ask only relevant questions based on intuition and past experience. Arrive quickly at a decision. (Most cases are treated this way in India?) b) Algorithm/protocol based: Ask all the questions, do all relevant tests, arrive at diagnosis using guidelines. Approach a is very quick, and may appear as almost magical when we look at experts making good decisions, especially in rare conditions.
But it is also affected by bias, like the outcome of a case that you have seen in the recent past But is it not ideal for us to refer to steps for chronic diseases like diabetes? This may give the impression that the doctor is not so important, but many studies have proven the role of protocol, especially in developed countries. So what would you choose, a or b?
