Bier block or intravenous regional anesthesia is an easy, effective, and globally accepted alternative to general anesthesia. It is indicated for short-duration (30β45 minutes) surgeries of extremities, especially in ambulatory surgery centers. 1 The technique involves using a tourniquet to prevent systemic drug absorption, followed by injecting 30β40 mL of 0.5% lignocaine or prilocaine into the peripheral vein. Bier block is not commonly used for lower limbs.
2 Advantages The use of a tourniquet allows for a bloodless surgical field. 1 Shorter post-anesthesia stay in the care unit 1 Reduced incidence of nausea 1 Fewer chances of failure 2 Quick onset (within five minutes) 2 Offers muscle relaxation 2 Disadvantages Discomfort due to tourniquet or compartment syndrome 2 Venous engorgement due to vasodilation makes it difficult to have a bloodless field. 2 Used for short-durationβ¦
