This is something unusual discussion ahead that may explore the mind of a surgeon. Ideally, the surgeon should take the responsibility of his patients to achieve the patient’s safety goal. But, often the final survival outcomes of a patient depends upon the perfect coordination among the multiple surgeons involved in a complex surgery, the pathology/radiology lab testing, appropriate medications and care by the nurse staff. For example, consider a patient who had 1 or more undesirable outcomes due to the errors made by a nurse or a pathology lab or a colleague. In such a case, who is responsible?
