World Breastfeeding Week is observed between 1 st to 7 th August every year. More than 120 countries participate to promote, support, encourage and spread public awareness about benefits of breastfeeding for improving the health of babies throughout the world. Breastfeeding is a way to provide the right amount of nutrients in infants and protect them against some common childhood illness and infections. It also helps to reduce the risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer in mothers.
Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended up to 6 months, while nutritious solid food and complement breastfeeding should be provided up to 2 years or beyond. Globally, around 38% of infants get breastfeeding during their first 6 months.
