The study examined 26 pathogens from an initial review of over 150 pathogens, assessing their potential to cause human disease and the current availability of candidate vaccines or monoclonal antibodies. The study compiled a top ten list of pathogens requiring vaccine R&D for each of the African, American, East Mediterranean, European, South-East Asian, and Western Pacific regions.
A consolidated global list of 17 priority pathogens was created from these regional lists. Notably, these pathogens are grouped according to their current stages in vaccine development.
