The EDL lists the diagnostic tests that should be readily available at various stages of health care. Out of 113, 55 tests diagnose infectious diseases caused by viruses and parasites that accounts for 5 million deaths per year. Many tests listed are immunoassays detecting specific microbial antigens and pathogen antibodies in the blood, enabling rapid detection compared to culturing approaches. Although WHO EDL is an important step, its successful implementation will require political commitments regarding funding to laboratories, accessibility, and affordability of tests.
