World Anesthesia Day is observed on 16th October, to commemorate the day when William Thomson Green Morton, an American dentist, successfully demonstrated the use of inhaled ether to treat pain during dental treatment. Painless surgical treatment was the main motive of this discovery. Since then the science of anesthesia has evolved at a rapid pace wherein the role of anesthetics is not restricted during surgeries but also in pain management, palliative and critical care.
