Around 235 million people have asthma, and over 80% of asthma-related deaths occur in low-and lower-middle-income countries. Asthma is a chronic disorder involving lung airways and may occur in children and adults. While some children may undergo asthma remission in adolescence, others may have lifelong asthma with progressive loss of lung function over time. World Asthma Day is observed every year on the first Tuesday of May by the Global Initiative for Asthma to improve awareness and care about asthma worldwide.
