The practice of blood donation first started when Richard Lower initiated blood transfusion in animals. The discovery of ABO human blood groups by Karl Landsteiner in 1901 and the rhesus factor by Alexander S Weiner in 1937 were major milestones enabling safe transfusion of blood and blood products in humans. Since then, multiple studies have been conducted, and meta-analysis data suggests that roughly there are 44% people with group O, 42% with group A, 10 % with group B, and 4% with group AB. The COVID-19 pandemic has burdened the health care system with several challenges, one of them being the shortage of blood due to a reduction in blood donation campaigns and active donors.
