The United Kingdom reports the first death associated with the “zombie drug,” xylazine, which was originally used as a sedative for large animals like horses. The deceased was a 43-year-old male with a history of illicit drug use. This drug is concerning, and here is why: It lowers heart rate, blood pressure , and breathing rate. When combined with opioids like fentanyl, the risk of life-threatening consequences associated with respiratory arrest is doubled. There is NO antidote to xylazine.
It is not approved by the FDA for human use. Earlier this year, xylazine was wrecking the American streets and was used as a street drug by humans resulting in skin infections and overdoses .
