A 17-year-old boy has been in bed with what the family thought was flu as it was "going around at that moment." However, the boy’s family is now worried as his condition is speedily getting worse. He is so weak that he is bedridden and unable to get out of bed. He has aching joints and dizziness. The family also says that he is "burning up" and on stripping him to cool him down his mother has noticed that he has developed a red rash. After examining the boy, the doctor finds a non-blanching rash which fades under pressure.
On examination: Temperature: 39.2° Pulse rate: 106 beats/min Blood pressure: 102/65 mmHg He has a headache and is not photophobic but is a little phonophobic.
