Early-onset psychosis is the term given to the first episode of psychosis before the age of 18 years. In comparison to psychosis in adults, early-onset psychosis has a poor long-term prognosis in terms of functional outcomes, need for hospitalization, and relapse. Co-existing premorbid difficulties, long-standing untreated psychosis, and severe symptoms at baseline assessment further worsen the overall prognosis. Adolescents with psychosis have higher suicidal tendencies than those without psychosis.
Early-onset psychosis poses a significant economic burden on the patients and the healthcare system. The following downloadable infographic summarizes a UK-based trial on managing early-onset psychosis in adolescents. Take a look! To download this infographic, click here!
