A study published in the journal Sexual Medicine investigated the causal association between statin use and erectile dysfunction (ED). The researchers performed a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis using genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data from the FinnGen database, which included 6,175 ED cases and 217,630 controls. Key findings A total of 65 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified as being associated with overall statin use. Overall statin use was associated with a higher risk of ED (OR, 1.064).

Lipophilic statins, including atorvastatin (OR, 27.892) and simvastatin (OR, 4.948), were associated with a significantly increased risk of ED. In contrast, no causal association was observed with the hydrophilic statin rosuvastatin. The MR Steiger directionality test confirmed a robust causal relationship between statin use and ED.
