The Supreme Court has charged a huge compensation of Rs. 17,287,500 to the doctors and a hospital involved in the death of a patient due to medical negligence under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. The incidence of toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is reported to be 1.3 per million per year, with a male-to-female ratio of 2:3. TEN has a mortality rate of 25 to 70%, with nearly 1% of drug reactions needing hospitalization. Below is the case of a 36-year-old woman, an unfortunate victim of TEN, which caused her death.
The case is an extraordinary one due to the highest-ever compensation claim by a complainant for medical negligence before any consumer under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act of 1986.
