A 49-year-old man with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection, hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease was evaluated in a kidney transplantation clinic because of declining kidney function. Cause/setting of the problem: This patient’s presentation, is complex, but not unusual. The interplay between HIV and chronic kidney disease is complicated and is influenced by coexisting conditions, such as diabetes mellitus and hypertension, demographic factors, like age and ethnic group, coinfections, like HCV, antiviral treatment, and HIV-related factors, like viral replication, the CD4+ T-cell count, and induction of chronic inflammation.
